"I Drew Y'all Ugly on Purpose"

16"x13"

While researching possible ways to create an exaggerated and warped piece of art, I came across quite a few sources of inspiration. One artist who inspired my process of this drawing is Rupert Shrive. He is famous for "destroying" his paintings by crumpling and folding them to make a distorted and unique visage. Below I attached a link to his website if his art at all interests you.

Here I did a study of of of his paintings, a self portrait, to get a sense of how he distorts his faces and how I could create something visually unique using inspiration from the misshapen and folded reference.

With this new inspiration, I found myself some references of my sisters and got a sense of how to fold and distort the paper. I documented some of these folded papers in my sketchbook along with some of the distorted sketches I practiced with. One problem I faced was that the paper was not as easy to distort as canvas would be. The folds in the paper needed to be more intentional than I originally thought, because of the papers tendency to rip and tear.

After a bit of experimentation, these are the finial distortions that I came up with.

I created a sketch inspired by the folded and crumbled paper which made them look more "cartoonish" and certainly a bit strange. My medium of choice was colored pencil and by scrolling through the slides, you can see my documentation of my coloring process. I tried to keep warmer colors on the left and cooler colors on the right in order to create a nice contrast between the two girls. I kept the colors fairly saturated as another way to slightly distort the reality that this artwork is set in.
