"Scribble Drawing"
"24"x18"
charcoal on paper
Before I started working with charcoal, I experimented with the medium a bit. I had not used it in a while, so I warmed up with some faces.

The idea behind the scribble drawing was to scribble on a piece of paper and find shapes in the scribbles. Then start to add value and form into the piece, turning a scribble into an abstract piece of art. This was my scribble by the end of the first day.

Another thing that we were encouraged to do was to change the piece. Keep the elements that we liked and cover the elements that we did not like. By the end of the second day, I had added much more value and started adding in white charcoal. I had also added in new elements, covering up old ones that were not working.

Here, I continued to rework the piece. I sprayed it with fixative and would draw over that to seal in what I liked and keep going. I also constantly turned the paper in order to see the drawing from many different angles. Although it is displayed online from one angle, the composition is strong no matter which way you turn it.

The final piece was finished with charcoal pencils. The left side of the piece is my favorite, but you must stop a drawing somewhere or else it would be too hard to work with. Although I absolutely loathe both charcoal and making abstract art, I think this project was the most tolerable. I liked that there were not many rules and I could just do whatever I wanted with it. There was not expectation to how it would come out because it stated with a scribble. It was a very helpful exercise in my opinion.
