Charcoal on Paper

For the Historical Figure Reproduction, I knew that I wanted to make a charcoal piece. I researched a drawing that I could use as a reference and came across one which I thought would work well to practice anatomy I was less familiar with.

This is the image that I chose to recreate. This artwork titled "Life Study" was created by Antonio Gonzales Ruiz in 1744. The original medium was red chalk. I decided to recreate this piece because I am less familiar with drawing men and also less familiar with the back profile, so it would be a good challenge and learning experience for me.
To begin with, I created a grid drawing to get all the dimensions moved over to a large piece of paper. Then I decided that instead of erasing all the lines created by the grid, I would do a charcoal transfer to a new piece of paper and use that as my final sketch. A charcoal transfer is where you put charcoal on the back of a drawing and then lay the paper on a new piece of paper. Then you draw on top of your sketch, transferring the charcoal from the back of the paper onto the new piece of paper.
I recommend opening the slideshow to see the entire image.
After the sketch was created, all I had to do was recreate the image using charcoal. This meant that I was using black and white values instead of red. I used black and white charcoal to put in all the values and charcoal pencil to get the smaller details. One requirement was to add in a modern twist so you knew that the drawing was made in the 21st century, so I decided to add in a nod to my favorite anime. I added in an iconic symbol used in the manga and anime. It is an onomatopoeia which roughly translates to menacing. I also added on a star birthmark which is another reference to the anime.

I am glad that I chose something out of my comfort zone. I think I learned more about anatomy after doing this master-copy, and that is basically all I wanted from this piece.
