"Practically Impossible Cube"
18"x18"
When starting this piece, I was not very confident with my knowledge on perspective. Although the perspective was supposed to be wrong and warped, I am a firm believer that you have to be able to make something to break it. In other words, before I could warp the perspective, I needed to know how to draw it correctly. I used a variety of videos, mostly the ones given to me from my professor, to practice and relearn some perspective techniques that I had forgotten since highschool art class.
Linear Perspective Videos:
One Point Perspective:
Two Point Perspective;
Three Point Perspective:
Here is what my sketchbook pages looked like. On some pages I experimented with perspective trying to come up with an idea and others I practiced correct perspective so I could learn to break it. By the last page, the purple inked page, I was starting to form an idea. I wanted to make a 3D cube that had rooms inside of it which would be impossible in the real world. I also wanted to warp the perspective in each room to create variety and a unique an fun style.
Once I knew what I wanted to do, I started with a sketch. I measured out all my lines to make everything even and correct, just like you would do in a normal perspective drawing. Next, I sketched in three rooms and started adding things to the outside of the house. My medium of choice was ink and I used multiple techniques to create texture and value within the piece. I also used white ink in places like the bricks, mirror and tapestry. The design of this piece is very interesting because the incorrect perspective makes it look child-like, but there are also many elements such as balance, value, and mark making that suggest that it was intentionally made to look that way.
My main goal for this piece was to have an interesting composition that could be viewed from multiple different ways, and have a good range of value and balance throughout the piece. I think I was able to accomplish this and am happy with how it turned out.
