"Dinner Time"

6"x18"

I began this project as usual, a short synopsis and brain dump in my sketchbook. Here I was able to dabble with possible mediums, follow some helpful exercises and create color pallets. One of the exercises I did was to draw my feet from a top down angle, then continue to draw what I saw as I lifted my head until I reached the ceiling.

Once I had my idea in mind, I took some reference pictures and stitched them together in photoshop to create a rough idea of what I wanted the layout of the artwork to look like. This Is very quickly put together, so don't judge it too hard...

(For these next slides, I recommend clicking on the image to see the entire piece. It is a very long canvas!!) After I had an idea of the layout, I started the sketch, adding details and notes for future Jordyn to decipher (Image 2). One of my biggest struggles was in picking a medium. I gravitate towards acrylic when I am unsure of my medium, but I wanted to challenge myself since I AM in a drawing class. I chose to start with alcohol based markers; I do not have much practice using these, but colored pencil layers very nicely on top, so I stuck with it. I started on the top, then skipped to the bottom and finally finished with the fish tank.

I wanted this piece to have a lot of texture in it which I was able to accomplish with the colored pencil. I also wanted a big emphasis to be on the contrasting orange and blue throughout the piece and struggled with what to do with the green plants. I also wanted the final piece to have a unity that connected the different perspectives together and told an interesting story from three different angles. I think I was able to accomplish this by overlapping parts of the top middle and bottom. Never have I ever wanted more than 72 prismacolor colored pencils before, but this project made me want a bigger selection. I did not have some of the colors I was going for, and I especially did not have all the alcohol markers I wanted to complete the piece. Overall, the piece was a bit of a struggle but I am happy I pushed myself.
